John Carey, Saxophone


John Carey joined the Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra this year, bringing with him 5 years of experience playing alto, tenor, and soprano.


A sophomore at Lincoln High School, he has played with the symphonic band, the jazz band, and jazz combos under the direction of Aaron Barnes, and was named to the 2011 Western International Band Clinic Honor Band. John also plays saxophone with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Jazz Band 1, the Alan Jones Academy of Music, and the Jazz Senators, a combo that plays at community fundraisers and private events.


John currently studies with Scott Hall, and previously studied with Tim Bryson.


John picked up the alto saxophone at Riverdale Grade School, where he joined the jazz band, earning outstanding soloist awards two years in a row at the University of Portland Jazz Festival and outstanding musician upon graduation. He started playing in the sixth grade with the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra, studying under the direction of Ben and Michelle Medler, and is a former member of the Portland Youth Philharmonic Wind Ensemble.


John plans to continue studying music in the future.


In addition to music, John is a hard-working member of Lincoln's Constitution Team and an avid swimmer, competing at the high school state championships and US Swimming's Senior Section Championships this past year.
