The Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra directed by Thara Memory--this year's Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Fame inductee--took 1st place in their division at the prestigious Berklee College of Music's 38th Annual High School Jazz Festival 2006 in Boston Massachusetts on Saturday, February 11. Pacific Crest's Combo took 2nd place.

Three students walked away with individual recognition for outstanding solos. Grant Richard on piano, Zach Ferguson on Tenor Sax and Hailey Niswanger on alto sax took 3 of the 4 top soloist awards and Hailey won "Judge's Choice" for both of the competitions, as well as the top honor for the outstanding soloist.

The evening showcase featured performances by the first place winners of the vocal ensemble and the large ensemble categories--including the Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra.

The members of the orchestra came together under Mr. Memory's instruction only five short months ago and include: Stephanie Baird, Ian Christensen, Brant Crabbe, Zachary Ferguson, Candace Hamar, Nick Hamel, Alden Harris-McCoy, Sam Hunt, Ian McKivor, Anthony Meade, Kathrine Miller, Javier Nero, Hailey Niswanger, Tree Palmedo, Anthony Polson, Grant Richards, Patrick Sargent, Duncan, Standish, Sam Stidham, and Tylor Toll.

Jazz enthusiasts and patrons of American Art Music can hear the Pacific Crest Orchestra along with the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra Big Band, vocalist Rene Marie, jazz guitarist Jim Hall, and keyboardist Geoff Keezer in the Portland Hilton Grand Ballroom on Sunday, February 26 as they celebrate the induction of trumpeter-music educator, Thara Memory, into the Hall of Fame. Doors open at 3 pm. General admission is $35.
